Among computer hardware enthusiasts, hardcore gamers, and early adopters, there is perhaps no computer manufacturer who stands as tall as Alienware. Barely ten years old, and recently purchased by Dell, Alienware rode to the forefront of high technology by concentrating on every facet of design, while incorporating only the latest circuitry inside its machines.

A recent trend known as “case modding”, in which computer owners customize the cases of their PC’s, can be attributed to Alienware’s rich history of unique case designs. But some of the more fresher case designs are based on comic books or movies, including  their best-selling Star Wars and Superman case designs. The jaw-dropping price tag of $1000 – that’s like buying 3 Kindles – might also prevent most of the reading public from joining the color revolution.

Will the E-book replace ink and paper books?

No.

However, get used to seeing E-books share retail space along with a 1,500 page War and Peace.

Portable electronic books are not about to invade the business or consumer world quickly as the Internet, cell phone, and PDA which have complicated and cluttered our desks and our lives. And don’t expect the E-book to encroach your bedside table just yet, either.

However, do expect over the next ten years to see a hybrid industry of books both in print and digital formats. We likely will see books published in two versions at two different costs to serve more markets.

Some believe the E-book readers are the next generation of readers — the same who readers who enjoyed the Harry Potter series — in hardcopy.

“The real problem is that people read less and less and prefer other forms of entertainment or other channels to get content (say the web). I have a Sony E-reader but I only use it for proposals and still prefer to read an actual book when I read for pleasure,” said a publishing editor.

The E-book Challenge

The striking difference — and possibly off-putting – is that many feel the E-book is distancing simply by its form: It is plastic, hard and digital and therefore impersonal and cold. Holding an E-book cuddled up by the fire is just not quite the same.

This is a serious and real challenge for the manufacturers. There is a large market of dedicated readers they must try and reach in order to gain acceptance across the reading public. Otherwise the E-book is nothing more than another occasional convenience.

In 2000 when I was a Research Director at Gartner Group, I predicted that many enterprises implemented projects in an effort to rival the efficiencies touted by larger players, however they struggled to gain the customer acceptance required to justify the costs.

How much?

Most people read print and use electronic devises to search, browse and discover. E-book reading technology may be acceptable to many people as an additional book-type device, but only if the price is right. The benefits have to meet the reader’s expectations.

The E-book industry is crowded with more gadgets than buyers. Readers can choose various features from the Kindle 2 by Amazon, Digital Book by Sony, Sony Reader by Sony, iLiad by iRex Technologies, Hanlin eReader by Jinke, and Cybook Gen3 by Bookeen.

Balancing the whistles and bells with reality is yet another hurdle for buyers and sellers. The features of electronic books will have to meet the “Pain Threshold” (PT) test. In order to pass PT, the features must offer readers a unique experience they can’t get from a real book. A good comparison to E-book attributes is similar to considering discount store coupons; the percentage off doesn’t matter if the product is something I normally wouldn’t buy anyway?

I mean, do I really care if I receive Giraffe Daily on my Wireless Sony E-reader? Reading is much more personal than any technological device on the market today.

Sounds to me like the cable might be subject to some electro magnetic interference.

Apple’s MacBook Air has been a very popular machine and there have been many people who have jumped at the chance to own one but is this because of the capabilities of the machine or simply the innovative look of this product? The Air has been marketed by Apple as the “world’s thinnest notebookâ€, however, have been a few claims that have said there was a Mitsubishi laptop from 1997 that was a fraction thinner but there are no other laptops around at the moment that come close to the size of the Air. The design and the engineering of this product is amazing and we would expect no less from Apple laptops, however, this device is very specialised and will no doubt not be as widely used as the standard 13-inch Macbook system. This could be because the MacBook Air has a few well-documented downfalls; it only has room for one USB port and no room for a built-in optical drive, mobile broadband, Ethernet or Firewire. On top of this, Apple still refuses to include a media card reader or an SD expansion slot in their laptops. However, there are of course some all-important plus-points; the ability to wirelessly connect to another system’s optical drive and new touchpad gesture controls. If you’re after an Apple Mac but aren’t sure whether the Air is for you then you will need to think of what you want from your laptop. For those who travel around a lot and who would benefit from a light-weight machine but with the extra screen space and who tend to hook up to the internet using Wi-Fi hot spots will probably be very impressed with the Air and its £1,199 price tag. If your needs are more complex and the high tech Apple MacBook Air doesn’t impress you too much in the looks department anyway then perhaps the new Dell Studio range laptops will suit you more. Dell laptops are made for a range of different prices but if you don’t want to be seen with the a cheaper Dell Inspiron laptop but the XPS range is well beyond your budget then the new Studio range could be just what you’ve been looking for. The Dell Studio 17 model can, like all Dell laptops, be customised to make it exactly what you’ve been looking for. The options start from the entry-level 1.73GHz Pentium Dual Core T2370 and work their way up to the 2.5GHz T9300 model. This means that there are choices of this laptop that will suit most budgets and performance needs. This model also has an HDMI output port and comes with a choice of three panels for its 17-inch screen; again, you can customise the screen in order to get the laptop of your dreams and with a price tag of £499, this sounds like a real bargain.

The Apple MacBook Air has a fantastic design, but you wouldn’t expect anything less from Apple laptops. If you want an Apple Mac but you’re not sure whether the Air is for you or not, the best thing to do is to think about what you want from a laptop. Dell laptops are sold for a range of different prices.

Asus UL30A-X5 13.3-inch Laptop: Since its launch last month, the new ultra-slim Asus UL30A-X5 has taken the laptop world by storm. It is stylish, chic, powerful and affordable. Some of the features found on this model include a 1.3Ghz Core 2 processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, a 13.3-inch HD display, 802.11b/g/n wi-fi and Windows 7 Home Premium OS (64-bit). MacBook Air 13.3-inch Laptop: The list would never be complete without mentioning the iconic MacBook Air. Despite being one of the earliest ultra-slim laptop to hit the market, the Air has remained one of the slimmest and lightest laptop ever made. It is powered by a 1.86Ghz core 2 duo processor, which also makes one of the most powerful ultra-portable laptop in the market. The MacBook Air measures at just 0.76 inches at its thickest point and weighs just 3 pounds. The only thing that is big about this laptop is its price. It currently sells for around a hefty $1448 each.

Acer Aspire AS1410 11.6-inch Laptop: If it wasn’t for its slightly more powerful specs, I would classify the Acer Aspire AS1410 as a netbook. This laptop has a 1.4Ghz Core 2 processor, 250GB for storage, 2GB of RAM and an 11.6-inch HD screen. The batteries on this laptop can last up to am impressive 6 hours on one charge. This is one of my favorite models because it gives you such great value for your money. Currently, the Acer Aspire AS1410 sells for just around $419 each!

Dell touch pad have zooming capability, if you scroll on the left side of touchpad it will work as zoom in/out, or there are some other gesture available to zoom. if you don’t need those features you can disable them. there must be a icon on the system tray Alps pointing device or something. you can enable/disable ur touchpad features from there. you can also get the same settings from Control panel > Mouse properties.

1. Excellent Specs: The ASUS UL30A-X5 has been one of my favorite laptop models for 2009 and from the look of its sales figures, is set to take 2010 by storm for a while more. This 13.3-inch model comes with a 1.3Ghz Core 2 processor, which is pretty decent for an ultra slim laptop. The Core 2 processor allows you to perform a variety of moderate and light computing tasks on this machine (as opposed to the Atom processors on netbooks).

2. Lots of RAM: As for memory, this laptop comes with 4GB of DDR3 RAM. This will be heaven sent for all chronic multitasking laptop users (such as yours truly). I often run 5 or 6 heavy applications at the same time and the ample RAM on this machine really helps.

3. Spacious Storage: For me, the 500GB that comes with this laptop is a pretty generous features (for its size and price). Many similarly priced or more expensive laptop models come with a 320GB hard drive or smaller.

4. Beautiful Display:The 13.3-inch display on the ASUS UL30A-X5 is a HD display. It is LED back-lit and has a 1366 x 768 resolution. I often watch HD videos on YouTube and the screen consistently display crisp and vibrant images.

5. Mini Entertainment Unit: Many laptop users often use their laptops to watch movies or listen to music. This model comes with an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics processor and a pair of SRS Premium Sound Altec Lansing speakers. There is also a HDMi output to connect the laptop to a larger HDTV.

6. Gorgeous Design: I just love the black version of this laptop model. It is very slim and has a brushed-metal finish that gives it a very expensive look. The chiclet keyboard looks really good and was very comfortable to use.

7. Ultra Portable: The 13.3-inch ASUS UL30A-X5 is barely an inch thick at its thickest point. It measures at just 0.98 x 9.28 x 12.9 inches and weighs 3.74 pounds. It will easily fit into any large bag and its lightweight makes it ideal for those who often need to travel with their laptops.

8. Plenty of Features: There are lots of cool features on this model. For instance, there is the Asus IceCool Technology that keeps the palm rest area cool to the touch, even after a prolonged period of use. It also has a multi-touch track pad.

9. Ultra-long Battery Life: In recent times, Asus has been leading the pack in terms of battery life. The batteries on the ASUS UL30A-X5 can last up to a jaw-dropping 12 hours on one charge!

10. Great Value for Money: Despite having all these cool features, this laptop remains very well priced. At the moment, the 13.3-inch ASUS UL30A-X5 retails for around $649 each.

Last month the first in the new NVIDEA 9000 series was launched. The GeForce 9600GT 512 Mb is the first of this new line that saw the light.

This new line of has to replace the whole NVIDIA assortment before summer. It’s six moths ago that we had our first view of the 8000 series, so things are moving quickly at this company

We tested the first sibling in this new range of graphics cards the 9600GT. In itself the fact the NVIDIA made the debut with the 9600GT model is unique. Mostly the high end super gaming monsters are the first to see the light. This is a middle class model but has is build around the new G94 GPU, and will be one of the few cards featuring this chip. Both the 9800GT and 9800GTX will be based on the G92 GPU.

The overall design is no revolution. Improvements in performance are great, and the price/quality ratio has gone up. But from a technical point of view there is not much new under the sun.

Both the G94 and G92 GPU’s don’t support DirectX 10.1 like their competitor Ati Radion with the 3000 series. If this lack of support is a great drawback remains to be seen. Their are no games supporting 10.1 and since the shelf life of a graphics card in the gaming sector is less than 6 months we need not be overcritical at this point.

Both GPU’s support PCI 2.0 and Pure Video 2 ( we had already seen this in the G84 and G86). But the new cards are cheaper, faster and have a better energy efficiency.

Although the 9000 series is not the most innovative, fact remains that they are interesting cards. If we compare the new GT9600 with the GT8600 (based on the G84 GPU).

The 9600 stands out with an 256 bits memory bus, while the 8600 had to work with half that amount, 128 bits. That this increase has pronounced effect on the performance stands to reason.

Where the GeForce 8600 had a maximum bandwidth of 32GB/sec the 9600 is capable of 57.6 GB/sec. Further the number of shader processors is doubled compared to the GPU84.

The clock of the 64 unified shaders increased from 1450 Mhz, to 1625 Mhz. The conclusion of this move is that Nvidea now has found a healthy balans between GPU power and memory bandwidth.

The 9600GT has two Dual-Link DVI connections, both HDCP capable. Dell is the only manufacturer that has a display capable of utilizing that possibility with their 24 Inch 2408WP and 30 Inch 3008WFP. Other companies promised to come with compatible models later this year.

Decoding HD imagery is no problem, so blue ray enthusiasts can rest assured. The GT9600 can be placed in double SLI. and beats its competitor the HD 3870 from Ati Radeon on all fronts. Tripple SLI is not possible but we have the feeling that not many of the potential buyers of this card will be interested in such a feature.

A comparison table for different games and resolutions can be found on our site. A strange phenomenon is that the overall energy consumption of the HD3870 X2 is higher with less performance.

To wrap it up, we think that a complete new line in 6 months time is a bit overdoing it, but that NVIDIA did a good job with the Geforce 9600GT 512 Mb. The great never seen before price/performance ratio is the and the consistent beating of the 3870 from Ati makes this card a great choice for the demanding but not overly fanatic gamer.

As soon as we can lay our hands on the 9800 models with will very happy to give them a good spin and find out what their extremes are. With our strange inclination we love to put new cards on the torture table.

Help! Problems with a Triple Monitor Setup!?

I have a Dell XPS 710H2C that has 4GB of Ram and 2 Nivida GeForce 8800GTX Graphics Cards.

Did you hook up one monitor, setup the resolution for it, then add another, set it up as dual, then add the third? This might be something to try.

when i set up my dual, if the monitor screen was flickering it was because my resolution was incorrect (and if the output wasn’t set to digital or analog).

Nvidia has software to getting the monitors to work.
