My pick would be the iRex… but I suppose it depends on what you are looking for.

Although the Franklin eReader is not for everyone, it is possibly the cheapest ebook reader on the market at present, and an affordable option for people struggling to buy e book reader devices.

You can use Sony’s software to convert them, or Calibre from http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net. You may need to convert (save as) to RTF first.

The Sony Reader can read RTF files, so you can open them in Word, and “save as” RTF. It works best to use a large font size, like 16 or 18 points; otherwise they’ll be very tiny on the Sony Reader.

To make eReader-friendly PDFs, you need to change the page size to the right size for the reader: about 3.5×4.6 (that’s not exact, but it’s very close) or 90x120mm (ditto), and change the margins to something very small. (I use .1″ margins all around.)

Word’s “save as ebook” option will save a file as a Microsoft .LIT file, not an ebook that can be ready by the Sony Reader.

o Most readers still need to be inspired to give digital novels a go. In a recent survey asking people if they had read an ebook, more than 60 percent replied “What’s an ebook?”
o Most publishers still need to find a digital formula that returns satisfactory profit. They badly need response from readers to point the way.
o And booksellers? They don’t need convincing. Just count the DVDs and CDs that crowd their shelves these days. Their problem is how to earn a living from ebooks.

With all sections of the book industry striving to meet the digital trend, it is the buying public who will eventually determine an acceptable pattern of trade. Good books at a fraction of current prices is an attractive proposition. But how enjoyable is an electronic page compared to paper and a sturdy cover?
If Ebook Week can get more folk trying the unfamiliar and finding pleasure, then it will be not just a happy event. It will have added a dimension to human happiness! Does that claim sound pompous? Okay, so let me pomp, because Happy always gets my vote.

I own the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. It is better than Sony Reader because Amazon provide good content support, and the number of books available in Kindle format is kept on increasing (right now there are 300,000 Kindle books). Sony Reader, however, many users complain that it is difficult to find suitable books, and books on it are more expensive than the Kindle. Other benefits of the Kindle over Sony Reader include the free wireless internet access, and the text-to-speech function.

For those who are new to ebook reading devices and are interested in getting one, here’s a comparison of the Amazon Kindle 2 vs. Sony Reader and how they match up against each other.

Price
The price of any gadget is a big factor for many individuals especially for first-time buyers. The Amazon Kindle 2 is currently priced at $359, while the Sony Reader is currently pegged at $399, making the Kindle 2 cheaper by $40.

Size and Weight
The size and weight of these gadgets don’t really give one distinct advantage over the other. The Sony Reader PRS-700 weighs around 10 oz., the Kindle 2 just slightly over that. Display

By just choosing the reading content of choice and paying for it, the book or magazine will be downloaded to the Kindle anytime, anywhere within minutes! The Sony Reader PRS-700 on the other hand, still lacks this wireless capability, and with only less than 100,000 books to choose from, it does not even come close to the breadth of content that the Kindle offers.

Formats Supported
Both electronic book readers support most commonly used formats such as TXT, MP3, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP, plus some formats unique to each device. The Sony Reader however, supports PDF while the Kindle 2 does not – not directly, anyway. PDFs still need to be emailed to Kindle’s support desk to be converted for viewing on the Kindle and Amazon has gives an advance notice that “some complex PDF files may not format correctly” on the Kindle.

Storage Capacity
In this feature, the Sony Reader gains the clear upper hand. True, the Amazon Kindle 2 has 2G of internal memory of which 1.4g is available for content and can hold up to 1,500 books, but it no longer supports external memory cards. While the Sony Reader’s 256mb internal memory may seem like peanuts compared to the Kindle, the main advantage actually lies in the Sony’s ability to support up to 16G of external memory. Now that’s a great benefit not only when it comes to holding thousands of content should one need it, but also for managing files into different memory cards.

Battery Life and Charge Time
The two ebook readers have the same capacity when it comes to battery life. On a fully charged Kindle 2 or Sony Reader, one can read straight for two weeks without needing a recharge. The only difference is that if the Kindle 2 is used with the wireless turned on, the battery capacity is reduced to just four days. Charging time for both readers is four hours via USB, or two hours using an AC wall charger.

Although it’s not a total knock out for the Kindle over the Sony Reader, it’s close! The Amazon Kindle 2 remains the better ebook reader hands-down. Which would I buy? Neither. I would can get the Asus EEE PC for $299. This is a 7-inch color screen laptop that runs Linux and has word processing and spreadsheet and Internet and wireless and games and other features. It comes with a PDF reader, so you could easily read your Ebooks with this and use it for lots more, if you wanted.

If you’re not comfortable with that, then I would advise checking out the lists of titles available for purchase and see how much each would cost in the long term and whether either has the books available that you would be likely to buy.

Plus, you either need to obtain the book in Sony’s e-reader format or PDF. Right now, there just isn’t a lot of book availability in these formats.

Before you spend the money, maybe research other things you could do with your laptop, e.g. adjust the contrast, use a different program, adjust font sizes, etc. Fundamentally, the Sony Reader screen is built with the same technology as your laptop screen.

It now seems that Amazon Kindle wireless ebook reader have stolen a bit of a march on the – yet to be released – Sony Digital Book Reader Daily Edition. In this endless battle, with outright victory going to the one that dominates those ebook reader reviews, Amazon have reduced the price of their Kindle2 model in an attempt to capture as much, pre Sony Daily Edition launch, business as possible.

The announcement is being seen in some quarters as a panic move, by Amazon, as the new Daily is also Sonys attempt to topple the Kindle from the number one position it has enjoyed since it’s launch, back in February 2009. So just what has this new wireless reader got that has Amazon running scared?

Let’s start with what is always the most imposing feature of any ebook reader, the display. The Sony sports an all new 175mm (7″) touch screen that has the latest e-Ink Vizplex technology, giving crystal clear, crisp, paper like qualities and will be touch screen enabled. It will also support landscape and portrait reading modes, handling it much the same as the iPhone. It will also be the first of Sony’s reading devices to support wireless connectivity.

The networking capability, delivered in the US through AT and T’s 3G (broadband) cellular network, is probably the feature that gives Amazon the most concern. It will allow users to connect directly to the Sony e-Book Store and download not only books but magazines and daily newspapers as well. This puts the Daily in direct competition with the Kindle2.

Like the Kindle, this wireless e-book reader has no monthly network usage fees and with the supplied cables, you can also load, direct from your Mac, PC or laptop, documents and content such as electronic books. Another advantage the Sony Digital Book Reader has over the Kindle is the file formats it can handle. It supports the “freebie” format. PDF – with reflow capability, Microsoft Word, BBeB, .txt and other text based file formats, but the biggest news is it’s ability to handle the Epub format.

This is great news, on the back of Googles announcement that over one million ebooks will be available, many thousands for free, from the Google library in this fast emerging format. It does seem the industry is trying to calm customer concern about propriety file formats and at least try to offer a format that will allow them to swap digital book readers without loosing their library, something that would have happened with first generation models. Now when you look at the fact the Kindle does not support this format you can start to see why they are starting to panic.

The bad news is that this wireless ebook reader will not be appearing on any ebook reader reviews until some time in December when it will make it’s debut in the stores, priced about $399. You can see now why this Sony digital book readers got the Kindle running scared.

But that’s far from all. You see, this new program, nicknamed “day and date” movie downloads will only be playable on Apple devices. That includes iTunes on your desktop or laptop, the iPod and iPod Touch, the inimitable (though many continue to try) iPhone, and now – drumroll please – Apple TV.

Granted, Jobs and his Apple empire have a lot of competition for your viewing pleasure. As the iPhone gets down and dirty with the likes of the RIM BlackBerry, the Samsung BlackJack, the Palm Treo, the Sprint Touch, and the Nokia N95, AppleTV takes the gloves off as it enters the ring with both web-enabled video purveyors like Sony, HP, and Apple’s nemesis number one, Microsoft, as well as digital movie purveyors Blockbuster, Amazon, Netflix, and CinemaNow. It’s going to be a rough battle, to say the least, but there is little doubt who, at the end, will reign supreme.

The “day and date” pricing structure was reported in the New York Times to be as follows:

• $14.99 to purchase new releases
• $3.99 to rent them
• $9.99 to purchase older films
• and $2.99 to rent them

Emulating WalMart’s business model of losing money on entertainment products just to get customers to walk through the door, Apple will actually be paying $16 per movie per purchased download. Why the negative profit margin? Why, to get people hooked on Apple TV and other Apple exclusive home entertainment products.

Apple TV 2.0 was released in February of ’08 with an intuitive, user-friendly interface that puts the viewer in full control of their viewing experience. Currently it sells for only $229, less – for the time being, at least – than the iPhone.

The main difference between watching downloaded movies via Apple TV instead of using any of the current standard methods is that rather than waiting three-quarters of an hour for a movie to download only to eat up a gigabyte or more of precious hard drive space, with Apple TV you can watch selected movies immediately. That’s the equivalent of the difference between driving down to the movie theater to stand in line only to wait (im)patiently for showtime and using your TiVo or Comcast cable’s On-Demand service. Nobody likes to wait – and with AppleTV, you don’t have to.

Immediate gratification just found another new friend in Apple.
